Glossy Photo Papers

First Choice :  Fuji Multijet Premium Glossy 270gsm

The differences between photos printed on Fuji Multijet Premium Glossy and Epson Premium Glossy photo papers isn’t huge, but the Fuji wins. Prints seem to have more saturation and depth. The oranges in the Fuji print of the composite look slightly more realistic than those in the  Epson and Ilford Smooth Glossy results, where colours are muddier. There’s not much in it though, so any of these three papers will work well with the R1800 / R800.

Matt Photo Papers

First Choice :  Permajet Museum Classic 310gsm

Like the Epson 2100 most fine art matt papers work well with the R1800. It just seems a little harder to get the same quality as with the 2100. For matt results if I had to choose between the printers I’d choose the 2100. The R1800’s trump card is with glossy papers. My own favorite matt paper is Permajet Museum Classic 310gsm but any of the Permajet Fine Art range will probably perform just as well. The real plus of this paper is the depth it seems to give the image, although the difference between it and Epson’s own Archival Matt, is much less than with the 2100.

Budget Choice :  Epson Archival Matt 192gsm

Although the Permajet Fine Art paper is wonderful it isn’t cheap, so for day to day printing with the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 this Epson paper is a really good buy. Sold in packs of 50 sheets at reasonable prices it’s one of few OEM bargains out there. I just wish they would make it just a little heavier weight. As it is, image quality is good but areas with dark colours tending to wrinkle just a little.
