How to get the best out of Canon EOS 7D RAW Files

The Canon EOS 7D is one of the best cameras Canon’s has made in the last few years.  Although an excellent camera in its own right, the Canon EOS 50D wasn’t the camera  Canon needed to compete against the Nikon D300, but the 7D certainly is. In terms of construction the Canon EOS 7D is more than a match and in image quality, which, after all is what really counts, the Canon EOS 7D is way ahead, especially at high ISOs.  With 18mp rather than the Nikon D300’s 12mp, Canon have again leapt to the front of the field. Although initial test results with Canon’s own DPP were good, along came Adobe Lightroom 3 and the results got much, much better.

The Canon EOS 7D has so much resolution, and bettter per pixel clarity than any other APS-C DSLR I’ve used, that most RAW processing packages will give excellent results up to about 400 ISO, but at high ISOs, once again Adobe Lightroom 3 or Photoshop CS5 are what you need to get the best out of the camera. Canon’s own free Digital Photo Professional (DPP) comes a close second if you shoot at low ISOs, but at 800 ISO and above, even DPP isn’t nearly as good as Lightroom 3 / Photoshop CS5.
