Canon 28-70mm f2.8L

Tested with a Canon EOS 5D

Full Aperture: I’m relieved to find that, at least in the centre, full aperture results are pretty much what you’d expect from an L series lens. While not perfect, resolution does drop a bit towards the 70mm end - over most of the field it’s pretty good at f 2.8. However, corners are fairly soft. More worrying is the slightly harder edged vignetting visible in the corners at full aperture - especially at 28mm. Over the years I’ve owned lots of ultra fast lenses which, although sharp, were unusable at full aperture because there was so much loss of illumination in the corners. To me that makes the speed a bit pointless. Usually very expensive and pointless. Lots of film camera f1.4 50mm standard lenses fall into this category so it’s not new with digital. OK we now have software that can even things out, but that takes time and isn’t always a perfect answer.
